Small percentage are Evangelical
The percentage of Mexicans who, in the last national census, identified themselves as "evangelicals" is near 6%. In some states, especially in the south, over 10% of the population identify themselves as believers. There are, however, six states in which less than 2% of the people identify themselves as evangelical Christians. Amazingly, these six states share common borders, forming a circle in west-central Mexico known as The Circle of Silence. Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacan, Queretaro and Zacatecas make up this block of the least-reached, spanish-speaking population in Mexico.
The Highlands
In the very center of the Circle are the Jalisco Highlands, where the percentage of believers is 0.3% - three Christians for every one thousand people. Here are dozens of cities, hundreds of towns and thousands of communities with no Christian church of any kind and no on-going testimony to Christ.
But in this area so barren to the Gospel and so entrenched in the traditions of an idolatrous Romanism, the Good News of Jesus Christ is impacting lives, as workers move to the area and workers are raised up in local congregations to carry the message to the next town.
Here are a few of the reports of advances in new areas:
- Jalostotitlan, with a population of 28,000 and no Christian church, now has a Bible study in progress. Several young men have come to Christ and are meeting with the small congregation in the neighboring county of San Miguel.
- Santa Maria del Valle, a ranching community of around 5,000, now has a family preaching the Gospel there and a group of 7 to 10 believers gathering.
- San Ignacio, which recently became the "capital city" of its own newly formed county, now has one believing family. This family is currently meeting in the a congregation in the neighboring county. Half of the official congregation of San Ignacio lives in the United States, principally in the area of Detroit, Mich.
The Powerful Gospel of Jesus Christ
The most powerful message in the world, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, is being carried to this region by the most powerful army in the world, the Church of Jesus Christ, with the most powerful support in the world, the prayers of God's people.
