PROFILES OF COURAGE:
Misael & Taira Hernandez

Misael came to Christ as a young man in Veracruz. Active in his local church there, he finished college and accepted a job in far-away Arandas, where he would be working with two older cousins. Misael was surprised to discover that there was no church in Arandas (he did not find the congregation where Jose and Luz Flores were working) and was even more surprised to discover that his two cousins, both professing Christians, were not walking with Christ and showed no apparent interest in the Lord.

In months of working there, he continued to talk with his cousins and there families about the Lord and to engage co-workers in conversations about the Gospel. He married his fiancé and moved her to Arandas from Veracruz. They both continued to be a light in their circle of influence.

Late one night, Misael received a phone call from one of cousins. Trapped in the cycle of drugs and drunkenness, he had watched Misael. Now he wanted to know what to do to get right with the Lord. Misael led him and his wife to Christ that night. Shortly after, the other cousin, along with his family, came to Christ. Because they knew of no other church in the area, they drove every week to Guadalajara, a two hour trip, to attend a church there. The missions pastor there gave Misael a challenge: If Misael would come to Guadalajara every other Saturday for a discipleship program, this pastor would visit Arandas every other Sunday to preach. On the alternating Sunday, it would be MisaelÕs responsibility to take charge of the meeting. They began meeting, Misael finished the discipleship course and the congregation grew. As the work grew, it became more difficult to continue in his employment and also serve the Lord and the church as he felt was needed. He and Taira prayerfully made the decision to begin to live by the Gospel. He gave himself to evangelism, to strengthening the church and to conducting in Arandas the same discipleship program he had taken in Guadalajara.

The church grew. They rented a building in which to meet. The discipleship program had fruit. Then came a new challenge: Recognizing Misael's gifting as an evangelist, Open Air Campaigners invited him to join there organization, their first evangelist in Mexico. Together Misael and Taira prayed, sought counsel and prayed again. They made the decision and are presently serving in Mexico as evangelists with OAC. They continue to live in Arandas and serve in the church, and they continue to target the Jalisco Highlands and the larger Circle of Silence.

This couple, who could easily have chosen to live a more comfortable life, are teaching believers throughout the Highlands and throughout Mexico how to evangelize and they are taking those believers out into the streets with the Good News of Jesus Christ.
